ABOUT

Silver Heights is an camp and retreat center serving Southern Indiana and Greater Louisville and is the longest-running camp in Indiana.

HISTORY

Silver Heights Camp was originally envisioned and established by James H. Conner. His vision of a holiness camp near New Albany, IN, came to fruition in the year 1888. He dreamed of a place where people of faith could gather to worship together and experience the peacefulness and serenity of the surrounding countryside.

Silver Heights is located on 22 wooded acres in the beautiful hills of Southern Indiana. It is the longest running camp in the state and has hosted thousands of men, women and children.

The first camp was held under the shade and welcome of a large canvas tent. The horse and buggies tied to available trees and posts surrounded this and other tents that provided shelter and offered food. The camp’s popularity increased by word of mouth and by 1892, a large wooden Tabernacle had been built to seat 2,500 attendees.

Silver Heights thrived, as people traveled from both near and far to join in the annual camps. In 1909, an estimated 10,000 people attended the camp. Cabins were built to accommodate campers as was a two-story summer hotel that featured 21 rooms. Eventually 31 family cabins, a grocery and a dining hall were added. Later, a five-room army barrack was sent from Camp Taylor, Kentucky. In 1954, the preacher’s cabin was completed. In 1961 and 1963, new boys’ and girls’ dormitories were added. Then in 2002, fire destroyed most of the cabins, grocery and dining hall, and the old barracks. The Tabernacle, constructed in 1892, survived the fire along with the preacher’s cottage and one of the dormitories.

A new, dedicated team of leadership volunteers is committed to preserving the camp for future generations. Their first step was the demolition of the old dilapidated buildings and the construction of the new Parnell Center.

New cabins have been constructed and the old Post Office renovated into a Prayer Chapel.  Renovation of an existing building was completed in 2023 and will provide additional meeting space for the camp.  The space will accommodate up to 50+ and has been named Connor Hall in recognition of our founder, James H. Connor.

128 years the Tabernacle was the focal point of Silver Heights Camp.  Over those many years thousands gathered to worship.  Since the structure was in need of repair, the difficult decision was made to replace the Tabernacle.  The new construction resembles the old Tabernacle and was dedicated in the summer of 2021.  The new Tabernacle will be a place for people of faith to gather for years to come.

WHO WE ARE

Mission Statement

To provide a spiritual retreat, set apart, where God is changing the lives in our communities.

Vision Statement

At Silver Heights Camp youth and community can experience God through nature with affordable programming and inviting facilities.

Statement of Faith

We believe:

The God of the Bible is the eternal Creator and Sustainer of the universe.

God has revealed Himself to humans through the creation, His spoken Word recorded in scripture, and in human form in Jesus of Nazareth, the incarnate Redeemer, the only Savior for man’s sin, crucified and resurrected.

The Christian life is initiated by the actions and provisions of God (GRACE) and received by faith and humble repentance.

With salvation (new birth) begins the process of growth in Christ, becoming more like Him as we cooperate with grace, through faith. The Lord indwells us and changes us into new creatures, eager to do His will. He forgives all past and confessed sin, and cleanses every surrendered temper or selfishness of heart until we are filled with His love and begin to reflect His character to the world.

Besides community in the Church, which is His ordained means of a Christian family, the goal in life is to make disciples of Christ and to grow in Christian maturity and holiness.

Core Values

At Silver Heights Camp and Retreat Center we value our visitors and campers. Because of our commitment to those individuals, we feel it necessary to make sure members of leadership agree with and stand for our core values. Those placed in any type of leadership at Silver Heights must agree and abide by the beliefs listed below —

  1. I believe that all people are created in the image of God and are therefore deserving of respect, love and kindness (Genesis 1:27; 1 Thessalonians 5:12).
  2. I believe that everyone has sinned and does not measure up to the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
  3. I believe that because of our sin, we deserve death (Romans 6:23).
  4. I believe that salvation is a gift that comes only from the Lord. It is by the blood of Jesus Christ, through the repentance of sins, that one may receive salvation (Romans 6:23).
  5. I believe that the grace of God is given and not earned. (Ephesians 2:8-9).
  6. I believe that the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).
  7. I believe that there is one and only one true God who has revealed Himself to exist as three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16; Luke 3:22; John 14:26).
  8. I believe that the Bible is the inerrant, infallible word of God. It was written by men through divine inspiration and it is God’s revelation to man (2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-2).
  9. I believe that God creates each person in His image and that life is sacred from conception to natural death (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 139:13-16; Psalm 127:3-5).
  10. I believe that God made man in His image. Each person was made either distinctly male or distinctly female and is evident in the nature of his or her biological makeup (Genesis 1:27, 2:7).
  11. I believe that homosexuality is a sin and, just like all sins, needs to be repented of and avoided (Romans 1:18-32;   1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:10).
  12. I believe that marriage is ordained by God and is between one man and one woman. Sexual intimacy should be reserved for a person and his or her spouse. Any act of sexual intimacy outside of marriage is a sin and should be repented from (Genesis 2:23-25; Exodus 20:14; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 15-20; 1 Timothy 1:8-11).
